The best way to describe this would be as comfort reading. Just like with comfort food you know you will get something you like, it puts you at ease and the entire experience is simply relaxing and very enjoyable.
Painter has created a fun and interesting world with Nocturne Falls. The world building is brilliant. It's intricate yet lightweight. Which keeps this series firmly in the easy and pleasurable reads, but it's detailed enough to make each book set in Nocturne Falls unique. Painter mixes myth and folklore from all over the world and adds her own little spin to it. The result is perfect as a backdrop of the series.
Each book I read set in Nocturne Falls, makes me like the characters. And with Jayne Frost being a spin-off from the Nocturne Falls Series, we have gotten quite a few characters. Re-meeting them is priceless. So I was beyond pleased to have Delayne and Birdi featuring in this book and quite a few more of them... See comfort reading? Seeing the old characters through Jayne's eye is refreshing, it shows a new side to them but it's also like meeting old friend. In my opinion this is a sign that Painter is a master at her craft. It's seemingly simple, yet it's masterfully done, again just on point. And even after finishing, I can't wait to read the next book set in Nocturne Falls.
The plot is fun, it has a cool little paranormal mystery, it well paced and very entertaining.
Now looks at her rating. My ONLY downer on this: the romance. It just doesn't work for me. And to be frank, I can't even critic it much. There is a lot of chemistry, great companionship and communication. Jayne is super honest, I really appreciate it. Buuut I ..
sighs.. I can't warm up to it- at all. I can't even chose a camp. I just wish there would be a choice made and we could move on. I think though, many reader will love this and they will be happily choosing camps and root for a possible outcome. Me, nah, I just want to be done with that phase. I really wish I felt different, but I don't. Which is why this is only 3.5 Stars rather than 4.
So, if you wanna find a series to curl up with and just enjoy- this could be it for you. It certainly is for me.
